The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission is a public body established in October 1945. As leader in research, development and innovation, the CEA is active in four main areas: low-carbon energies, defence and security, information technologies and health technologies. In each of these fields, the CEA maintains a cross-disciplinary culture of engineers and researchers, building on the synergies between fundamental and technological research. The Laboratory of Innovation for New Energy Technology and Nanomaterials (LITEN) is one of CEA’s Laboratory involved in SUSFAB project. LITEN has a staff of 1000 people. Every year LITEN puts in place 400 research contracts and carries out R&D on behalf of industrial partners from a wide range of market segments: energy, land transportation, aerospace, construction, civil engineering, environmental, and IT industries, amongst others. Intellectual property forms a major part of LITEN activities. LITEN has a portfolio of 1,100 international patents, filing 200 patents in 2012, 235 in 2013, and 230 in 2014. CEA INSTN, the National Institute for Nuclear Science and Technology is a public higher education and national training institution, administered by the CEA. For 60 years, INSTN have been providing highly specialised teaching and training courses, at all levels – from entry level technician to researcher – based on science and technology for nuclear and new technologies for energy applications, as well as its industrial and medical applications. CEA INSTN put in place 115 people, and uses 1400 teachers and experts.

IDONIAL is a private, independent, non-profit, multisectorial technology centre create as the result of a merging process of two Technology Centers, ITMA (Materials Technology Center, funded in 1990) and PRODINTEC (Industrial Design and Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center, funded in 2004). It is the largest Technology Centre in the region of Asturias and contributes to the promotion and development of the business fabric in its areas of technological specialization offering integral R&D&I solutions in the entire value chain, from materials to manufacturing processes and products. The center now has over 165 employees working at IDONIAL (19% PhDs). IDONIAL main technological development and innovation activities deal with advanced manufacturing, digitalisation of industry and materials development and are addressed by 7 business areas: Digital industry, advanced manufacturing, engineering and simulation, steel and metallic alloys, ceramics and raw materials, surfaces, active materials and plastics, and technological services. With regard nanotechnology, IDONIAL has experience in synthesis and functionalization of nanostructures, development of functional coatings, and production process/pilots scaling up. With regards additive manufacturing (AM), IDONIAL is a specialised centre with more than 10 years’ experience in AM research and development, and in helping companies to explore new business opportunities around these technologies.

INL, the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, is the first, and so far the only, fully international research organisation in Europe in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. Constant involvement in a international organisations and fora, such as the OECD Working Party on Manufactured Nanomaterials, the OECD Working Party on Nanotechnology, ISO/TC 229, CEN/TC 352 and other national and international advisory groups and standardisation committees means that NIA can disseminate the results of the project to regulatory and standards bodies, as well as to the general public. The NIA is an observer in the European Commission CASG-Nano group and is an ECHA accredited stakeholder.

The SUSFAB project will be undertaken by the expert group POINT-Policies for Innovation and Technology. POINT links the technological challenges to the policy and business strategy landscape on local, regional, European and international context. POINT team of experts works in close collaboration with the technological divisions to explore, define and recommend those actions that help to turn technological progress into social and market innovation.

As the national institute for micro/nanoelectronics and photonics, and a research flagship of University College Cork, Tyndall employs over 450 researchers, engineers and support staff, with a cohort of 120 full-time graduate students. Together we generate over 300 peer-reviewed publications annually. With a network of 200 industry partners and customers worldwide, Tyndall generates 85% of its €35M income each year from competitively won contracts. Tyndall is home to a high-tech national research infrastructure unique in Ireland and is a national research asset.
